Are GLP-1 Medications Right for You?

Written by Dr. Laurie Pozun | Apr 17, 2026 9:44:29 PM

Rarely a day goes by in my practice without a patient asking me about GLP-1 medications like semaglutide, tirzepatide, Ozempic, Wegovy. The questions are remarkably similar: "Am I a candidate?" "Are the side effects as bad as I've heard?" "Is there more to these drugs than just weight loss?" I want to answer all of that here.

What are GLP-1 medications, and why is everyone talking about them?

GLP-1 receptor agonists — the class that includes semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) — were originally developed to treat type 2 diabetes. Researchers quickly discovered they also produce meaningful, sustained weight loss. That discovery changed the conversation around obesity medicine, and my patients have taken notice.

In my clinical experience, these medications can deliver significant benefits, but they work best as part of a comprehensive, personalized care plan, not as a standalone quick fix.

Who is a good candidate for GLP-1 treatment?

This is the question I hear most, and the honest answer is: it depends on the individual. That said, I consistently see the strongest outcomes in three groups of patients:

  • Patients with previous challenges: Individuals who have tried and failed other weight loss regimens

  • Patients with comorbid risk factors: Individuals with underlying health issues, particularly those who are pre-diabetic or diabetic

  • Patients with inflammatory symptoms: Individuals experiencing unexplained joint aches, pains, or brain fog

What about the side effects?

Side effects are one of the most common concerns I hear, and it is a fair one. Nausea, fatigue, and GI discomfort are real possibilities, particularly at higher doses.

My clinical focus is on micro-dosing: using the smallest effective dose rather than pushing toward the maximum. In my experience, this approach makes the medication far better tolerated and dramatically reduces the side effect profile for most patients.

Micro-dosing is not a shortcut. It is a deliberate clinical strategy. The goal is to find the lowest dose that produces meaningful results, so your body can adjust gradually, and you can stay on the medication long enough for it to work.

Can GLP-1s do more than help me lose weight?

Yes! And this is the part of the conversation that often surprises patients most. GLP-1 medications have demonstrated meaningful anti-inflammatory effects. I regularly see patients report improvements in joint aches and pains that had no clear diagnosis, as well as a notable reduction in brain fog. These are not placebo effects; they follow known inflammatory pathways that GLP-1 receptors appear to modulate.

For patients who come in frustrated that their inflammation or cognitive symptoms have gone unexplained for years, discovering that a weight-management medication also addresses those issues can be genuinely life-changing.

Should I ask my doctor about GLP-1 medications?

If you recognize yourself in any of the three candidate profiles above, yes, absolutely bring it up with your physician. There is no single right answer for everyone, and I am always open to having that conversation. What I want patients to know is that these medications are not just hype. When used thoughtfully, with the right person and the right dosing strategy, they can be a powerful tool in a broader plan for lasting health.
