August 28, 2026
LifeScape is proud to celebrate an exciting professional achievement for Dr. Laurie Pozun-Walsh: she has officially earned her Functional Medicine Certified Professional – Medical (FMCP-M) designation through the Institute for Functional Medicine.
This achievement represents hundreds of hours of intensive training, rigorous case studies, and a comprehensive certification examination focused on applying functional medicine principles to patient care. For Dr. Pozun-Walsh, it’s another meaningful step in her ongoing commitment to learning, growing, and bringing the latest advancements in medicine to the patients she serves.
We sat down with Dr. Pozun-Walsh to learn a little more about what went into earning this designation, what she found most rewarding along the way, and what she’s most excited to bring to her patients at LifeScape.
Balancing hundreds of hours of advanced functional medicine training alongside active patient care is no small feat. What inspired you to embark on this intensive IFM journey?
I am highly prevention focused. The most important aspect for me in my medical practice is to be able to prevent disease or symptoms by uncovering then treating the upstream, root precipitants.
Diagnosing problems is one thing, but to now have the comprehensive training and board certification in Functional Medicine provided by the Institute of Functional Medicine provides an incredible tool to help my patients in their journey away from disease and towards health and wellness.
Functional medicine requires a doctor to look beyond symptom management to root causes. Was there an insight or framework during your certification that fundamentally changed how you diagnose complex health puzzles?
Functional Medicine is a type of lightbulb moment experience in training and practice….
It fundamentally changed my focus in medical practice by requiring introspection into root causes of disease. It essentially requires a physician to first pull back and look at a much wider lens before zooming in on details of symptoms. It is the “Why” behind the “How.”
For example, evaluating nutrition throughout childhood and adulthood, stress triggers throughout life, social background, smoking & alcohol consumption or drug use, sleep patterns, food choices, and genetics…as all of these can trigger epigenetic changes in how your cells express these stressors. And these are often the fundamental root of disease or symptoms.
Medicine is constantly evolving, but functional medicine demands that a doctor constantly unlearn and relearn. What was the hardest conventional medical habit or mindset you had to break to earn this FMCP-M designation?
I trained at the Mayo Clinic, one of the top institutions in the world for disease diagnosis and management. Disease prevention was not heavily focused upon.
I always felt that there was a missing piece to the health and wellness puzzle, and that pure diagnosis and treatment of disease (while important) is missing the target of elucidating the “why.” Once I began training in functional medicine, this cloud was lifted for me…it was truly an “ah ha” moment.
For your patients at LifeScape, how will this advanced FMCP-M designation directly elevate their day-to-day care and long-term health roadmap?
The path for board certification in Functional Medicine was longer than most residencies in traditional medical training, taking over five years to accomplish.
As a result, I have been incorporating functional medicine aspects into my practice for many years now. The FMCP-M designation will highlight my dedication to this proactive and highly prevention-focused approach. It is the ultimate level in training, processing and utilizing this functional approach, and emphasizes a provider’s depth of knowledge and understanding.
But, more importantly, it shows the dedication to keep searching for the root causes for patients. Without that, disease and dysfunction continue or recur.
For someone frustrated by conventional ‘band-aid’ medicine and searching for real answers, what does this whole-person approach offer them?
It offers hope. I think of it as the antidote to conventional medicine shortcomings.
