Should You Be Doing A Skin Fast?

Yes! Think of a skin fast as a reboot (or detox) for your skin!

We’ve all heard about detox diets in recent years, and many of you have most likely done one. When done properly, a detox can help to clear your body of toxins, restore energy, reduce bloat and so much more by helping to heal the microbiome in your gut.

Just like the microbiome in our gut, our skin has a microbiome made up of microscopic organisms. These microscopic organisms have an important function to maintaining healthy skin and when out of balance, your skin could become dull, dry, irritated or even break out.

Think of a skin fast in the same way as a detox, but to specifically improve the health and appearance of your skin.

Now, while we’re all practicing social distancing, may be the perfect time to hit the reboot button on your skin too.

Why a skin fast could benefit your beautiful face?

Using harsh cleansers or cleansing too often, over exfoliating our skin, or over applying active ingredients on your skin, can destroy our skin’s natural barrier. This can lead to several skin issues including premature aging, redness or irritation, breakouts, and uneven skin texture.

How a skin fast works?

By removing some of these products from your routine for a period of time, you can reboot your skin back to a healthy and balanced microbiome that leaves you with glowing skin from within.

What you can do starting today for your skin?

Stick to the basics! Use a gentle cleanser, moisturizer, and physical sunblock (with SPF of 30 or higher) for a week or two, then slowly incorporate back to your regular aesthetician-approved skincare routine.

More often than not, we do not need to eliminate every skincare product from our routine during a skin fast. However, I do find that when I’m consulting my patients, they reveal that they are using multiple products with the same ingredients. Doubling up in this way can be too potent for their skin and result in negative effects.

For instance, using two products that both contain Vitamin C would be too much for your skin to handle, plus a waste of money. Pay attention to the active ingredients in each of your skincare products and make sure you are not being redundant.
