Akkermansia Probiotics for Gut Health

Akkermansia muciniphila has been a trending topic as of late. As a functional dietitian, I find it exciting to see science and general consumer interest come together to evaluate and discuss available options for transformational health.

That said, it’s important to do diligent research, and consult with an expert, to determine how these types of products will work for you.

Akkermansia Probiotics

A few years ago, PhD scientists from Johns Hopkins, Harvard, Berkeley, and Stanford teamed up to master probiotic science. Their work helped highlight Akkermansia — a keystone bacteria that helps strengthen the gut lining, improve metabolic health, and naturally increase GLP‑1 production. Today, Pendulum Akkermansia has over 15,000 medical professional recommendations and hundreds of five‑star reviews. Even Halle Berry joined the company after experiencing its benefits herself.

How Akkermansia Supports the Gut Barrier

Akkermansia can be a great addition to the provider toolkit as a keystone bacteria that promotes the health of the mucosal barrier inside the human GI tract.

I caution ordering it only from reputable companies such as Pendulum, who were the first to successfully make it accessible in capsule form - as it is an anaerobic bacteria (meaning it does not typically survive in an oxygen‑rich environment).

Pairing Akkermansia with Polyphenols and Omega‑3 Foods

Additionally, I recommend pairing Akkermansia with foods rich in polyphenols — like dark red and purple fruits or dark chocolate that’s at least 70% cocoa — to help nourish this species.

I also suggest adding omega‑3 rich foods such as wild salmon, sardines, herring, walnuts, chia seeds, and egg yolks to further support gut health.

Is Akkermansia Right for You?

At Lifescape, I help patients evaluate new supplements based on research and clinical experience. If you’re curious about the benefits of Akkermansia and how it could fit into your personalized gut health plan, I’m here to help guide you.
