Most patients do not understand the exceptional value of having a Family Physician. Unlike any other providers, Family Physicians are trained to see patients of any age or stage, providing true continuity across a lifetime which allows us to view the patient as a whole.
Our training includes women’s health, obstetrics and gynecology, and advanced hormone management, which empowers us to care for a wider range of needs within the same relationship.
Family Medicine is also intensively focused on proactive and preventive care. We are trained in a BioPsychoSocial model and in family counseling, which means we are equipped to address mental and emotional health, social determinants of health, and the full context of a patient’s life in addition to medical concerns.
Unlike Internists, Family Physicians are trained in both medical and surgical subspecialties, including dermatology, orthopedics, urology, ENT, ophthalmology, and general surgery.
In many specialties, the disease or organ system is the central focus and patients are episodic. However, in Family Medicine, the patient, family, and whole health are the central focus, and disease is episodic.
“In the military, Family Physicians were the most sought-after specialists,” shared Dr. Wilder, “Because they were considered the Swiss army knife of medical specialties, able to handle 80% of patient issues without many external referrals.”
Yet despite this broad and essential skill set, Family Physicians are becoming an endangered species. Unfortunately, very few doctors are entering the field due to poor reimbursements, high debt burden, and insurance hassles.
At Lifescape, we are always committed to the powerful, comprehensive model of Family Medicine and the impact it can have on the long term health and wellbeing of our beloved patients.
