Why Recovery Is My Secret Weapon

One of my core beliefs as a physician is simple: I should practice what I preach. That means staying active, watching what I eat, keeping my weight in check, and yes, stretching. When a patient sits across from me, and we're talking about making real changes to their health, I want to bring genuine passion to that conversation. Not just clinical knowledge, but lived experience. I think that matters.

My Recovery Essentials

So when I talk about recovery, I'm not just speaking from what I've read in journals. I'm speaking from what I've learned from working with professional athletes over the years, and from my own time on the ice.

I play hockey recreationally. And at some point, I stopped asking myself "how do I practice more?" and started asking "how do I recover better?" That shift changed everything. Here's where my focus goes between games:

Sleep is non-negotiable. It's when your body repairs muscle, consolidates movement patterns, and resets your hormones. Skimping on sleep quietly undermines every workout you put in.

Carbohydrate timing matters more than most people realize. It's not just about eating healthy in a general sense, it's about matching your fuel to what you're asking your body to do. Too little before activity and you're running on empty. Too much at the wrong time and you feel sluggish. Getting that balance right has made a noticeable difference in how I feel and perform.

Staying active in the right ways: light movement, stretching, giving your body permission to rest without being sedentary, rounds out the picture.

Results in Practice

The result? I feel better, I play better, and I've had fewer setbacks. Not because I'm drilling more, but because I'm giving my body what it needs to actually respond to the work I've already done.

This is what I bring into my practice at LifeScape every day. Whether you're a competitive athlete, a weekend warrior, or simply someone who wants more energy to keep up with life, the principles are the same. Recovery isn't the reward for hard work. It's part of the work.

If you're curious about what a more personalized approach to recovery, sleep, and nutrition could do for you, I'd love to have that conversation.
